A new Tribes game is coming next year and it’s not free to play- ‘We made some mistakes in how we monetized Ascend’-

Video credit: Colonelblair, composer: Leva

It’s been 25 years since the original Tribes—formally known as Starsiege: Tribes—made a splash in the world of online shooters, and more than a decade since the release of the most recent entry in the series, the ill-fated Tribes: Ascend. Now a new one is on the way called Tribes 3: Rivals, which is taking signups for “limited playtests” planned to be held over the next several months.

Historically, Tribes games have supported various multiplayer modes, but they’re really all about Capture the Flag: Two teams battling to snatch each other’s banners and hustle them back to their own base without getting wasted. What set it apart from the crowd were its large, wide-open battlefields and …

I’m not sure if the creatures you collect in first-person farming sim Among The Wild are cute or disturbing, but I’m already in love with them-

There’s a fine line between adorable and horrifying, and Among The Wild has one boot on either side of it. Revealed  at the PC Gaming Show today, the first game from Swedish developer Nuggets Entertainment is a first-person farming sim, exploration adventure, and creature-collector. And those creatures sure are cute… except, are they?

For instance, the pudgy yellow-beaked birds we see in the trailer are almost cute but their eyeballs are just a little too big and their pupils just a bit too beady, such that they border on sinister looking… so while I do want to pick them up I don’t really want to hug them. Then there’s your mount, which has the stocky pink body of a giant pig (cute!) but the face and horns of some sort of… pug-f…

Here are those AMD RX 6000-series and older GPU drivers you’ve been waiting on-

There’s a new driver download ready and waiting on the AMD website, and it includes support for RX 6000-series and older graphics cards after a while of being left out in the cold.

AMD has focused its efforts on developing drivers for its latest and greatest RX 7900 XTX and XT cards since their release in early December, 2022. As a result, older graphics cards have missed out on some day-one game drivers and features since introduced with AMD’s Adrenalin package.

That changes today with the release of the AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition Driver 23.2.1, which supports both RX 7000-series and RX 6000-series and older graphics cards. Its main focus is game support for Forspoken and Dead Space, promising up to a 7% performance increase in the former.

But the main thrust of …

Hundreds of Norwegian World of Warcraft players are furious after a bizarre new bug causes their game to freeze repeatedly-

Well, here’s an odd one. Last night, hundreds of furious World of Warcraft players took to Blizzard’s forums to voice their complaints about a bug that is making the game all but unplayable, which seems to have emerged from the recent 10.2 update. The twist? All of these players are located in Norway.

The issue was summarised by the Reddit user tastes-like-lemon on the r/wow subreddit, and it’s certainly unusual. According to the post, “Loading screens will very frequently freeze, and you need to ALT+F4 and relog to resolve the problem. This means you’re failing to load into m+, group finder content, PVP games and raids dozens of times every day during active play, and often getting booted from the group when this happens.”

The Blizzard thread where the issue was originally …

It took a modder just hours to add 4K support to the Metal Gear Solid collection-

In what may be a land speed record for highlighting the inadequacy of a PC port, modder Serge has published a small tool for the new Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection ports that enables them to run at 4K or other resolutions. Despite Konami’s confusing claims over the last few months, players learned today that the emulated HD remasters of Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 both render at 720p on PC, which makes for a particularly blurry picture on higher resolution 1440p or 4K monitors. This mod, which was released approximately 10 hours after the games unlocked on Steam, fixes that. It is 64.5 kilobytes.

I tested the MGSResolutionPatch in the opening minutes of Metal Gear Solid 3, setting the game to render at 3840×2160 (4K). The difference in image quality is stark.

It’s po…

Interpol busts 3,500 alleged cybercriminals and scammers, seizes $300 million of ill-gotten proceeds, and warns about the rise of the NFT ‘rug pull’-

The International Criminal Police Organisation better-known as Interpol has announced the arrest of 3,500 alleged cybercriminals and scammers, alongside the seizure of $300 million in cash and digital assets across 34 nations. The arrests marked the conclusion of what Interpol calls Operation HAECHI IV, a six-month investigation funded by South Korea.

The operation tackled seven particular types of cyberscam that Interpol lists as: “voice phishing, romance scams, online sextortion, investment fraud, money laundering associated with illegal online gambling, business email compromise fraud, and e-commerce fraud.” It says that 82,112 suspicious bank accounts were blocked, and it seized $199 million in hard currency and $101 million in virtual assets. Interpol says the majority…

Microsoft eats $20 million FTC fine for violating kids’ privacy on Xbox Live, admits no wrongdoing and promises not to do it again-

Microsoft has agreed to pay a $20 million fine to the US Federal Trade Commission to settle charges that it violated the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) by collecting the personal information of minors who signed up to the Xbox gaming service without notifying their parents or gaining parental consent.

Unlike PC games, which typically don’t ask for much more than a functional internet connection, Xbox consoles require an Xbox Live account to play online. Basic accounts are free to set up, but of course you have to enter all sorts of personal information in the process, including your full name, address, phone number, and all that sort of thing. There are different types of accounts for different age groups, including Child accounts, which are restricte…

Mod to add HDR to non-HDR games on RTX GPUs is built out of hidden settings in Nvidia’s latest drivers-

A new mod that enables HDR in non-HDR enabled games on RTX graphics cards has been released over on NexusMods, and users are reporting it’s better than the AutoHDR setting native to Windows.

The mod is called NVTrueHDR (via Videocardz and the Guru3D forum), and it comes from user emoose. It’s not entirely built from scratch, however, the mod is built upon some hidden settings stored within Nvidia’s GeForce drivers since the release of RTX Video HDR with version 551.23.

RTX Video HDR, first displayed back at CES in January, employs the help of a deep learning algorithm to convert SDR video into HDR video—dramatically improving the range of colours able to be shown on a compatible display. Turning on a few hidden “trueHDR” profile settings, however, and it appears this f…

Manor Lords publisher says the game’s success is ‘well beyond what we could have hoped’-

Manor Lords is one man’s unusual take on the joys of managing a medieval city and, after garnering a whole lot of wishlists, sold over a million copies within a few days of launch. The developer did try to set pre-launch expectations appropriately, warning players this was no Total War competitor, but the game’s emergent narratives, relative polish, and the historically accurate NPC name Cuntz has charmed players and left it sitting pretty on around 25,000 ‘very positive‘ user reviews.

PCG had the opportunity to sit down with Tim Bender, the CEO of publisher Hooded Horse, about working with solo developer Grzegorz Styczeń of Slavic Magic on the game, and how they’re trying to manage the scrutiny and demands that come with success on t…

StarCraft 2 spiritual successor Stormgate launches to a mixed rating on Steam, but Frost Giant is undaunted- ‘Mixed reviews are to be expected at this stage’-

Stormgate was unveiled in 2022 and it’s come a long way since then: It was the biggest videogame Kickstarter of 2023, earning $2 million on top of $35 million already raised through an initial funding round, and even managed to attract some celebrity voice acting from Simu Liu and Chris Metzen. It also made a big impression on online editor and PC Gamer strategysmith Fraser Brown, who declared that “for the first time in a while, I’m excited to dip my toes into the competitive side of real-time strategy again.”

The early access launch for Kickstarter backers hasn’t gone smoothly, however. Since its debut on July 30, Stormgate has earned a “mixed” rating on Steam across just over 2,000 user reviews: Common complaints include an incomplete story and unremarkable unit interactions, s…
